Understanding the Most Popular Types of Roulette

For centuries, roulette has been synonymous with one thing: glamour.

Since the popularisation of the game at the Monte Carlo Casino in Monacoin the late 1700s, the game has travelled the world, appearing in casinos everywhere from bustling cities like London, Las Vegas and Paris to the most remote casinos in the world.

Its popularity stems from the sheer simplicity of the game. Pick a number, a block of numbers or a colour (red or black, traditionally) and watch as a ball spins around the wheel, landing where it will.

There’s something in the anticipation which is utterly thrilling, and for casino fans across the world, roulette has become nothing short of essential.

With the rise of online roulette, however, many of us are discovering for the first time that there is more than one type of roulette out there. From European Roulette to American Roulette via unique online variations like Triple Bonus Spin Roulette, plenty of variations on the theme have been developped.

But what do you need to know about these versions of roulette? Join us as we take a look.

American Roulette

American roulette has become perhaps the most commonly found version of casino roulette in the world for one simple reason – it gives the house a greater edge.

How? Well, rather than having a single 0 pocket, American Roulette has a 00 pocket too, increasing the total number of pockets on the wheel and, therefore, reducing the odds for players from 1-to-37 to 1-to-38.

The other distinguishing feature of American roulette boards is the fact that the numbers are arranged in a local way, with sequential numbers placed opposite each other on the board, with 1 being directly opposite from 2, and 3 being directly opposite from 4.

Although the true history of roulette remains shrouded in mystery, with theories placing its birth in China, Monaco or even the office of Catholic philosopher and mathematician Blaise Pascal, European Roulette is still considered the most authentic version of the game.

It’s what swept the world before American roulette variations hit casinos and is still one of the best ways to play the game. So, what’s different about it?

European roulette features just one 0 pocket, rather than two like American Roulette. It also features numbers which are arranged randomly on the wheel. Together, these elements ensure that European roulette gives the player greater odds against the house.

Triple Bonus Spin Roulette

Perhaps the most popular variation found in online casinos is Triple Spin Bonus Roulette, a version of roulette which includes three wheels, instead of the traditional one.

What does that mean for you? Well, it means three 0 wells and three 00 wells, for a start, but it also means that a single bet has three times the chance of landing. Because the wheels are aligned vertically, you bet on groups of three numbers.

There’s also a yellow ‘B’ well, which, if you bet on it, gives you a chance at the mega jackpot of 12,000x your initial bet.

Although unorthodox, these roulette games typically have a higher RTP (Return to Player) than even European roulette boards, making them a great option for those who hope for the best chance of winning.
