How a Roulette Wheel Is Made

When the word Casino is mentioned one of the first things that springs to mind is a roulette wheel, after all its the basis of every casino in the world.have you ever wondered how a roulette wheel is made ? Most (probably over 80%) of the WORLD’S roulette wheels are made right here in the UK by 2 companies. Cammegh and TCS JohnHuxley If there is a casino anywhere in the world (and YES I mean Vegas as well) it will have a British made wheel in the casino.  Do you often hear the stories of the magnets under the wheel and the special buttons under the table to activate them when people are winning. Is it a myth or is there some truth in the urban legend of casino fixing.

To start with there is no magnetic materiel used in the making of a modern day approved roulette wheel. Yep I said NON, Zilch, Zero. The How a Roulette Wheel Is Maderoulette ball has no magnetic material either. I have been in the industry nearly 30 years and never came across one. However back in the bad old days and the Wild West there have been many a story and examples of rigged roulette wheels. There are also the stories of dealers being able to section spin. This involves the dealer spinning the roulette ball at the same speed every single time but also at the same time the wheel needs to be running at the exact speed so the ball drops in the same section of the wheel. Oh of cause there area few variables as the ball comes of the side wall of the roulette wheel then comes into contact with a uneven moving surface, then physics comes into play to make the event truly random as long as the roulette wheel is made to a professional and exacting standards as they do at Cammegh.

deal of the wheels are shipped with the Standard turret. The old Gala Coral group of casinos did have a very large letter G on their turrets. The original turrets Incorporated a 4 pronged spoke to make it easier for the dealer to keep the wheel spinning. The Turret Base : purely a decorative item designed to cover the height adjuster and again can come in a design you wish but usually the manufacturers like to have their name stamped here. The Height Adjuster :  manufactures have slightly different designs to each other but this is a functional item used to ensure that the inner wheel is perfectly level with the outer part of the wheel. After all if its to high the ball will never drop into the pocket (I have seen it) Bearings : Now believe it or not this is one of the greatest secrets of the roulette. Its not the actual bearing after all a bearing is a bearing, but its the way its designed and how it takes and distributes the weight of wheel head itself. There has been know to be some industrial espionage so the company can claim to have the longest running friction free wheel in the market. Ball Pockets: Today these are mainly manufactured from a single piece

of aluminum and can either be traditional (full cut out) scalloped or star-burst designed to give even more randomness to the bouncing of the ball. These also can come in any number of finishes and colour. Before modern manufacturing techniques each separator between the numbers was individually screwed onto the wheel which in turn meant that the casino staff had to do daily checks with a template called “Go NO GO” in every single pocket to make sure that each pocket was exactly the same size. A very laborious task just ask any of the old school croupiers and as in business the task was always passed down to the least experienced member of staff. The  Cone: This can be customized to anything you want, any veneer you can think of and them some as coloured designs have also been used to Jazz up the cone. The only important factor on this piece of the roulette wheel is that it is of equal density all around the cone. If the veneer is not stuck down properly this could cause a dead spot (the ball don’t bounce) and will cause a bias on the wheel. The Ball Track: most often it is made from wood and heavily varnished to ensure a smooth spin. Over time the varnish/lacquer can become worn and damaged causing irregular spins. One company claims to have overcome this problem by manufacturing their ball track out of a substance called velostone a composite of resin and stone which should never wear but improve over time to give a smoother finish. The Spindle : A single piece of steel machined to an inch (micro-millimeters) of its life. should have a consistent colour and only slight wear, any shiny spots on the spindle indicates wear and an unbalanced wheel. The Bowl : manufactured from a single piece of wood (well about 6 sheets of MDF glued together. This actually gives a greater strength to the product because of the multiple layers and a consistency a single piece of wood could not bring) The bowl can be decorated with paint, lacquer, veneer or anything you wish.

so you can see that the wheels are not fixed in any possible way. Every time the ball is spun it is the same chance 37 to1 where the ball will land, unless you are playing on an American roulette wheel which has an added “00” pocket increasing the odds to 38 to 1.

Ivorine

A long time ago the roulette ball was made from ivory and there were 2 very valid reasons why this method was ceased. Firstly the trade in ivory was stopped and the second more important for the casinos was the inconsistency in size and density of the materiel. Modern day roulette balls are made from 2 materials. Firstly is ivorine developed to mimic the colour, density and feel of the original ivory roulette balls. The second material that is used is a teflon roulette ball, both these balls have very different behavioral characteristics. The roulette balls also come in different size’s and normally there is no hard and fast rule if a 18mm or a 21mm ball is used on any particular day or even shift. I have seen the choice made purely from the managers preference  that day.
