Order Of St George And Churchill Are The Banker Royal Ascot Double

Order Of St George won the Ascot Gold Cup last year and can win the race again on the third of the five days of the Royal meeting. The horse is trained by Aidan O’Brien who can win another Group 1 contest with Churchill in the St James’s Palace Stakes. The double pays about 9/4 and that looks like the banker bet of the week.

Royal Ascot is the most prestigious Flat meeting in the world and the most lucrative in Britain and Ireland. Other individual races like the Derby and Grand National have bigger prize funds than the Ascot features but the monetary awards on offer are the biggest for any meeting in the UK.

Royal Ascot Double

Royal Ascot runs from Tuesday to Saturday and there are eight Group 1 and 18 Group races in total over the five days. The main race of the day is run at 4.20pm, the fourth race, and the meeting also includes listed races and Heritage Handicaps. O’Brien and Ryan Moore are odds-on to be the leading trainer and jockey and they are worthy favourites. Bookmakers will not accept a double on the pair as the outcomes are related.

One trend this year is the number of entries from jumps trainers, especially based in Ireland. Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott will have runners which could contribute to Ireland’s best ever tally. These two leading Irish trainers will target long distance handicaps and conditions races with their runners and both could have a winner and some placed horses. However, O’Brien and Moore should not be opposed.

Yeats won four Gold Cups in succession and was trained by O’Brien so he clearly knows how to win multiple Gold Cups with one horse. On ratings and form Order Of St George looks tough to beat but Simple Verse is a decent each way alternative. The horse won and then lost and won back the St Leger after an appeal in 2015 and is proven at the highest level. Big Orange lacks the class to beat Order Of St George so the favourite must be backed.

Royal Ascot Double

By the time the Gold Cup is run on the Thursday Churchill should have won the first day feature. The horse completed the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas double and is one of the leading three-year-old colts of the season. That status should be confirmed with a win at Royal Ascot because on all known form Churchill is the best horse in the race. Barney Roy is unlikely to reverse Newmarket form while Thunder Snow does not have the form in the book to trouble the favourite.

Jack Hobbs is trained by John Gosden and a win in the St James’s Palace Stakes will get a winner on the board for the trainer. That is his best chance of a winner during the meeting. O’Brien is a good thing to be the top Royal Ascot trainer for three years in succession and Order Of St George and Churchill can contribute to his tally of winners and four should get the job done.
