Manchester City Are The Champions League Favourites

England was the favourite to be the Champions League winning nationality after the first legs of the eight last 16 ties. Only Chelsea looked in trouble and potentially four of the quarter-finalists played in the Premier League. Things did not pan out quite as expected and only two English clubs progressed and now Spain is the most likely country of the winners of the Champions League. Manchester City are the favourites in the outright betting to win the trophy.

Tottenham and Manchester United were in good shape after their away ties in the last round. Tottenham drew 2-2 in Juventus and United left Sevilla with a goalless draw. The English sides were the favourites to make the last 8 but in both cases it all went horribly wrong. Tottenham were a width of the post away from taking Juventus to extra-time but United were woeful in losing to Sevilla at Old Trafford. Consequently only City and Liverpool are in the quarter-finals draw.

Chelsea played well and had chances but Lionel Messi was the difference for Barcelona who won their home leg with something to spare. Liverpool were wonderful going forward in their 5-0 away leg victory against Porto and it was job done after no goals in the return match at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp took Dortmund to the final of the Champions League and he can do the same with Liverpool. Pending the draw City could qualify for the Kiev decider which would mean the first All-England final since Manchester United beat Chelsea in the 2009 final.

Real Madrid had too much know-how for PSG and it was a case of a team beating a group of individuals. Cristiano Ronaldo scores lots of the goals and likes the limelight but he does his thing within the team structure and dynamic. The three PSG front men hardly pass the ball to each other and all want to be the main man. That works in the French League but not in the latter stages of the Champions League. There are three teams from Spain in the last eight.

Juventus have played in two of the last three finals but rode their luck against Spurs. Over the two legs the English club had more possession and created more chances but Juventus scored more goals. Paul Poigba was a massive part of their success in the Champions League but he has now moved from Juventus to Manchester United. Juventus will defend for their life but are vulnerable to one of the top teams. Roma are inferior to Juventus in the Italian league.

Bayern Munich are known as the Hollywood team of German football. They have the most money and can attract the best players. The Bundesliga is now a given so winning the Champions League is the objective. However, they are an ageing team and may be vulnerable against one of the superpowers. New money can beat old money in the Champions League and Manchester City can become the champions of Europe for the first time.
